Education- Bachelor’s Degree in Chemical Engineering from University Department of Chemical Technology (U.D.C.T.) University of Bombay.
Diploma in Business Management from Indian Merchants’ Chamber, Bombay.
Ujwal started his career as a Chemical Engineer with a Petrochemical Company ‘Amines & Plasticizers Ltd’ in New Bombay.
In 1981 he joined FILMCENTER (Asia’s first color film processing lab in Bombay started by Late Ambalal J.Patel in 1952) as Deputy Plant Manager. He was promoted as Technical Manager in 1989 & was involved in the modernization program of the Film Processing Laboratory.
For the last 26 years he has been working with the Patel Group of Companies which pioneered the Entertainment Technology in India.
After working as the General Manager-Technical for five years, he has been elevated now to the board position & is currently Technical Director of Patel India Distributors Pvt.Ltd. Mumbai, a company which is the distributor of FUJIFILM Motion Picture Negatives & Data Storage Media Products for the entire India & also has the latest Film Processing facility FILMLAB at Mumbai.
He learnt about SMPTE through the Magazines published by SMPTE
& presented his first Technical Paper at the 135th SMPTE International Conference at L.A. in 1993, followed by his second paper at the 1999 NY conference.
His third paper; presented at the 2002 Pasadena Conference about “Online Sensitometric Control for Motion Picture Film Processing” was well appreciated & he was granted his first U.S.Patent for this innovative technology in Feb2005.This technology will benefit Cinematographers & Film Laboratories around the world.
Ujwal has been representing India on the SMPTE Engineering Committees L-6 & F-2 for the last five years & has put some valuable suggestions about the practice followed in India about coating the original negatives & also about X-ray damages done to the negatives at Airports.
He has initiated the use of environment friendly UL-Bleach in India for processing Films, using Akzo Nobel’s Dissolvine Chelating Agents.
This technology replaces the polluting Ferricyanide bleach technology.
In recognition, he has been appointed as the Global Technical Consultant by ‘Akzo Nobel’; a Netherlands based Fortune 500 MNC.
Ujwal has traveled extensively around the world & also has many firsts to his credit.
He is the first Indian resident to get a U.S.Patent for Motion Picture Technology & first Indian to present three technical papers at the SMPTE International conferences.
He is also the first Indian resident to be selected as Fellow by the SMPTE.
